Don’t you love the fresh smell of laundry when it comes in from the line or out of the dryer? My Husband was complaining about the smell of some of our towels and I realized that I needed to again make some laundry soap.
I love homemade laundry soap because it gives such a fresh smell and the towels and dish cloths never smell sour. The last while I was just buying detergent as I was able to use coupons and get it for less then 2.00 a container. So when you get a lot of inexpensive soap you kind of slack off on making the good homemade soap.
For many years I heard of homemade laundry soap but it sounded like a lot of work to make these large buckets of liquid soap that needed heated and then later separated. I was excited a few years ago when I discovered that I could make powdered soap that worked wonderful. Today I got all the ingredients together and made a batch in less then 10 minutes.
You will need Borax, Washing soda, (not baking soda!) Fels Naptha soap, a grater, 2 cup measuring cup, and a container to put it in.
You need to first grate the bar of soap. My bar today was soft so it grated like cheese. I like to store my soap in an ice cream bucket so I grated the soap right into that.
Then I measured the soap as I like to put in equal amounts of each ingredient. It was just over 2 cups.
I then added 2 cups of washing soda and 2 cups of Borax. Then I used my hands to mix it.
Today my soap was a bit more chunky and not as dry. The last time when my girls grated it for me it was very fine and dry. As you can see this made it look much more like bought detergent.
When adding this to your laundry you only need to use 2 tablespoons per load so a batch will last you a long while. It works great in top loading machines as it does not make many suds.
What kind of laundry soap do you make?
