I really enjoy the outdoors and my flowers. I have lots of flower beds with many flowers and I enjoy them all. But then there are flowers that you cannot do without. Some I buy every year, some I seed, and some come up every year.
- Poppies. They are one of my favorites since they are one of the first perennials to bloom. You can get a few different colors but mine are orange. This is an easy perennial to seed as it doesn’t do too well to try to transplant it.
- 2. Black Eyed Susans. This perennial is very drought tolerant and is supposed to be deer resistant. Can easily be seeded or bought as a plant.
3. Purple Cone Flower. This flower even delights the birds. When it blooms and all through winter, the gold finches like to sit on the flowers and pick out the seeds. So not only is it pretty but it provides food for the birds. This plant can be seeded or bought as a plant.
4. Sunflowers. I like the smaller sunflowers to make bouquets. I like to have the yellow and the maroon ones for a variety. Once you seed them then the next year they will reseed themselves. The Gold Finches also enjoy the sunflowers.
5. Zinnias. I always plant several kinds of zinnias. I like the shorter ones to plant around my side walk. The taller ones look lovely against the end of the mini barn. I usually just seed them as they grow very fast. The butterflies always enjoy the zinnias too.
6. Petunias. Take me to a greenhouse and I will come home with mostly petunias. I always plant lots of wave petunias. Most of them are just seedlings from the past year. Last year I tried the Bubblegum pink Petunias and now they are my favorites. They look lovely in hanging pots or in planters.
7. Red sidewalk lilies. These were from a flyer in the mail that showed beautiful flowers all along a sidewalk. I wondered how long it took for them to look like that. But I was pleasantly surprised how quickly the bulbs spread. In just a couple of years you will have plenty of bulbs to transplant.
So now you know my favorites. What are yours?
