We all like the idea of getting rid of our stuff and feeling successful at having a yard sale. But what are the tricks to have your yard sale be a success?
This summer I had two different yard sales and both of them were quite successful. Both days I came home with less stuff and quite a few hundred dollars. So I thought I would share some tips so that you too can have a successful yard sale.
First of all I think that your success depends greatly on the location. If you are off the beaten path where there is little traffic, you will not have as many people come. If you want to have it at your home but you are not in a busy location, see if you can get some neighbors to help participate. If you can advertise as a neighborhood yard sale or a 10 family yard sale, you will have a lot more people come and thus make more money.
Both of my yard sales I had at a great location. The first one was in a neighborhood where there is a large neighborhood sale every year. The second one was at a yearly fall festival that had over 200 yard sales. Yes, it was lot of work to load my stuff up and take it somewhere but I’m sure that I sold lots more stuff then if I would have just had it at my house.
Another tip for a successful yard sale is to mark your stuff cheap. You want to get rid of the stuff, right? If there is an item that you only want to sell if you get a lot for it then that is fine if you only have a few items like that. The majority of your items need to be .25 to 2.00. Have your stuff cheap and you will make more money and get rid of more things.
Another way to sell more things is to display your items neatly. Clothes piled in a box will not sell as well as when you have them hung up neatly. To make a sturdy hanging rod, put a heavy pipe between two six foot ladders on the step before the top. Also put your big items out front where they are noticed. Items displayed neatly on a table sell much better than if they were just put out in boxes.
Make sure you have all your items priced. Sometimes I see something I like at a yard sale but it is something I don’t need, so I will pass it up if it has no price. But if it was marked 1.00 then I might think that I need it and buy it!
So try these tricks and you will find that next time you too can have a successful yard sale. What are your tips for having a successful yard sale?
