On Wednesday the children had a day off school. When I asked the girls what they would like to do, they were quick to response, “Make homemade doughnuts!”
Doughnuts are a treat at our house as I rarely buy them and we don’t often make them. Usually in the winter we think about making doughnuts. The weather did not seem like winter as it was in the 70’s but we still enjoyed making them.
Here is the recipe I used.
Doughnuts
6 tablespoons yeast
3 cups warm water
8-9 cups flour
1 cup margarine
1 tablespoon salt
1/2 tsp. vanilla
3 eggs, beaten
Mix yeast with half the warm water and set aside. In mixing bowl mix 4 cups flour and remaining ingredients. Add yeast mixture and mix well. Add remaining flour until dough is no longer sticky. Let rise one hour or until dough doubles. Then roll out dough to 1/2 inch thickness and cut out doughnuts. Let rise until doubled again and then fry in hot oil (360) on both sides. Glaze while still warm.
Glaze
1 1/2 Tablespoon butter
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
1 1/4 cup heavy cream
5 1/4 cups powdered sugar
Melt butter and whisk in remaining ingredients. This glaze tends to stay on better than any other one that I have tried.
The girls enjoyed rolling out the dough and cutting them.
We cut out the doughnuts with a wide mouth jar lid and the center we cut out using a doughnut hole cutter. You could also use a thimble.
We cut out quite a few but we failed to count how many there were.
Frying the doughnuts was my job. It is handy to fry them in an electric frying pan. Just make sure that you have the oil deep enough so they do not touch the bottom.
As soon as they were fried we glazed them. After you dip them in the glaze we like to hang them on dowels across the sink for them to drip dry.
Here is a box of finished doughnuts. They may not all look picture perfect but they sure do taste good!
We also filled some with cream filling. We just used a recipe for icing that goes into whoopie pies.
Don’t you wish you could come over and sample a few? Have you ever tried making doughnuts from scratch?

Yes I would like to stop over for a few 😉 I do make homemade donuts, not very often tho..usually when we have snow days & the children are home from school.

We usually like to make them when it is snowing too so it seemed so odd to make them in warm weather.
