Our main bathroom upstairs was in need of a new curtain. The old curtain had served us well for almost 14 years and I know it wasn’t new when I bought it. It must have been a well sewn curtain as most bought curtains don’t hold together so well after they are washed a lot of times.
I liked the simple white curtain so I thought I would make something like it. I stopped at a thrift shop and found a lovely white curtain that I was sure I could make over into the size I needed. And best of all, it was 1/2 price day so the curtain only cost 2.50.
The curtain panels were long so I laid my old curtain on top to measure for exact size. I cut the panels extra long so I could turn the top down and sew a casing to put the rod through. I cut the size I wanted from the bottom of each panel as they had beautiful finished edges.
To make it easier and so the end wouldn’t fray, I ironed the edge about 1/2 inch down. Then I turned the top down 2 and 1/2 inches and ironed that. I sewed right along the narrow turned under edge the whole length of the curtain. Then I sewed a little over an inch higher then the last stitch and that formed the casing where the rod goes through.
To make the topper for the window, I laid my old one on top of the panel lengthwise. This way I was able to have the pretty edging on the bottom of my curtain. I turned the ends in and sewed a finishing edge and then made the casing just like I did the bottom curtains.
So if you are able to sew a simple straight stitch, it is very easy to make over a used curtain into the size you want in 30 minutes. And it may only cost you a few dollars!
