The last two weeks have found me busy laying out patches for Trip Around the World quilts. We call them comforts and they will go around the world as all of them will be donated to a Christian mission who sends them world wide. My girls decided that it would be neat if they could find out where each of the comforts end up.
We laid out 22 different comforts in the last two weeks. One day my mom and sister in laws came and we laid out 8. My mom then took them home to sew them together.
Then last week the girls helped me lay out another 14. These will go to a very special lady at our church. She is 93 and for the last 8 years since she has been a widow she has sewn at least 225 of these comforts each year. We have a problem keeping her supplied as the patches need to get cut and then someone has to lay then out for her so they are ready to sew. She tries to limit herself to only sewing one a day! She is such a blessing and we thank God for her and sewing ability.
Once the patches are laid out then we put a piece of tape on each row. We number them from 1-17 and then stack them in a box. We put the larger number on the bottom and then each row we lay a little offset so they are easy to pick up by the row.
Here is one that is sewn together that Alana laid out. As you see, when they are sewn together then we put a border on the edge.
After they are sewn together we make a back for them and then put them in a quilt frame at church. Instead of quilting them, the ladies at our sewing circle use thread and knot them.
We put batting between the back and the front and then knot the corners or the centers of the patches. When we are finished we then sew the edges and the comforts are ready to be given away.
We have so much compared to many people. We also are so busy but we still like take a day here and there and give our time to help others. One of our favorite ways to do this is by making these beautiful Trip Around the World quilts to give to others. We hope they enjoy receiving them as much as we enjoy making them!
