From the beautiful Grand Tetons we drove to Zion National Park. Route 89 down to Interstate 15 was a very beautiful drive. You drive through some tight canyons and many curves so it made for an exciting ride especially in an RV.
It was a good days drive and the closer we got to Zion the warmer it got. We got a campground about a half hour away from the park. We spent some time the next morning doing laundry and office work.
We arrived at Zion National Park before lunch and already it was in the 90’s. We parked in town and took the shuttle in since in the summer you must ride the shuttle as cars are not allowed beyond a certain point.
The shuttle ride was hot and although we got off some to see the sights, it was just too hot to hike. We returned to our camper and ate lunch while we cooled off in the AC. So if you visit and it is very warm and you have small children then I suggest you skip the shuttle and just enjoy the park by riding in your air conditioned vehicle.
If we would have had a lot of time we would have liked to hike the Narrows. This is a trail that is 16 miles long and the trail is the river bed. If you don’t have the supplies along, don’t worry. You can rent river shoes, hiking sticks, tubes, and anything else that you might need.
Also Angels landing trail sounded like fun with 21 switch backs to get where only angels can land. We saw people hiking it but in 100 degree weather it did not look very tempting.
This park is very beautiful with steep cliffs and narrow canyons. Route 9 that takes you to the east entrance of the park is a lovely drive if you don’t mind the switch backs and no guard rails! To drive this road you must go through a tunnel that was built in the 1920’s. It was not built for RVs so for us to go through we had to get a 15.00 permit. The oncoming traffic was stopped so we could drive through the tunnel in the middle. The tunnel was about a mile and it was pitch black. We were glad for our lights and the windows that they had every once in awhile.
This park out of the 10 we visited was Gerry’s favorite. It was awesomely beautiful and would have been super lovely if the weather would have been cooler and we could have done some hiking. But there is still more parks and more hiking to come.

I really enjoyed the windows in that tunnel when we traveled that route in 1999. It reminded me of how we only see small clips of where God is taking us, while he sees it all.

I really liked those windows too. Just wished we could have stopped and looked out of them.
